Monster marlin dies in fight

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - NEWS -

A TOURIST landed her fish of the day after catching a monster 400kg black marlin on Tuesday.

It was Bill and Cherkee Hill’s first day of venturing out to do some heavy tackle fishing and Cherkee was blown out of the water - and sometimes nearly dragged into the water - by the big thrashing fish as it soared up out of the water before plunging back down into the ocean again and again for the next two hours.

Cherkee and her husband, Bill, had sailed out of Cairns late in the morning aboard their boat the Mai Tai and caught the magnificent fish at Linden Bank later that afternoon and fought for two hours to bring it onboard their boat.

Unfortunately, the fish died during the fight so it was brought aboard and weighed and found to be just shy of 900 pounds.

A crane was required to haul the marlin off the boat, with many onlookers upset that such a beautiful specimen was no longer roaming the sea.
