General manager of the Mossman Gorge Centre and is a nominee for the TPDD Mossman-Daintree director’s position
I UNDERSTAND how both challenging and rewarding the tourism industry can be in Far North Queensland. After a 15-year career in hotels and almost seven years in this area, I have developed a broad range of experience that I would bring to a role on the board of Tourism Port Douglas Daintree. The destination has many attributes that make it a compelling choice as a holiday location. We do, however, face tough competition when it comes to tropical holiday locations and it’s important that we keep our message fresh along with being motivated and creative in our ability to promote this iconic location. Being blessed with two World Heritage areas is a unique competitive advantage. TPDD has done a terrific job in communicating this message. It is not just what the visitors come to see that is important but also how they can engage with it. Promoting these experiences is an important step in a visitor’s decision-making process and how they can picture themselves engaging in these areas. As a business operator I understand how lower visitor numbers to the region has been the single biggest challenge for us all. The solution is no less challenging and requires commitment from the industry to gain better market share in our traditional markets along with stimulating growth in emerging markets. Domestic marketing should also play a pivotal role in our marketing strategies. Special Events brings interest and business to the region. It’s critical that TPDD continues to play a role in attracting and strengthening these events. The lucrative cruise business is another market that should be nurtured and maximised. Membership-based organisations require the commitment and work of its members to make it a success. I am willing to donate time and leadership towards promoting the destination and building on the hard work that has been done to date. I am confident that with a background in both attractions and hotels that I can approach a role on the board of TPDD with a broad understanding of the challenges and opportunities that we face together.
