Mayor buys Events NQ and promises Carnivale involvement
Cairns Regional Council Mayor Bob Manning has bought Events NQ and plans to keep Carnivale in Port Douglas as one of its biggest attractions. Cr Manning’s family company, Belmar Pty Ltd, bought the party and events hire company last week. The mayor’s wife Claire said that she and their son Paul would run the business while Bob would be a director of the company. Events NQ is involved with Port Douglas’s Carnival and organises the popular Food and Wine festival, the Seafood Extravaganza and the Longest Lunch. “We will continue to be involved with the spectacle of Carnivale and continue to help it to be the great event that it is,” Claire said. “We will be keeping all of the same 14 staff in our Cairns office and our two people in Port Douglas. We have bought the events side of the business and the previous owners will retain the exhibitions part of the business but naturally we will liaise and work together when and where needed.” Meanwhile, Cr Manning said his family had bought the business to highlight his and his family’s “confidence in Cairns and the future of the region”.
