THE motel where Christopher and Pixie Skase called “home” in Port Douglas while the Sheraton Mirage was being built will go up for auction tonight.
The Port Douglas Motel has almost 30 years of history behind it and is considered a prime commercial site as it is the closest half-acre property to the main street on one title.
The 20-room complex was built in 1973 and enjoys frontage to Davidson, Owen and Warner Streets.
Selling agent Callum Jones, of Tony McGrath Real Estate, said there are several registered bidders and plenty of options for the new owners to add to its rich history.
“This is where Skasey schemed his final touches to the Mirage,” he said.
“It’s got plenty of potential being on the one title and when you consider the last major resort was built in Port Douglas five years ago, it offers huge potential.
“In five more years those newest resorts will be 10 years old and a canny investor might see it as an opportunity to build something new.”
Callum said the management rights alone are worth more than $100,000 per annum and the motel is in good condition despite its age.
“They don’t build them like this anymore,” he said.
The motel will be auctioned at 6pm today at the Cairns Hilton. To register your interest contact Callum on 0437 981 195.
