REGIONAL Development Australia Far North Queensland and Torres Strait Inc has updated its regional “road map” to provide one voice on regional issues, opportunities and priorities.
Among the 11 strategic packages are several generic priorities that directly affect the Douglas region including infrastructure to support a speedier rollout of the National Broadband Network to Port Douglas.
“As part of the regional connectivity package we got a plan to support the NBN rollout straight from Townsville right up to Port Douglas and fast tracking that,” CEO Sonja Johnson said.
“And we’re also looking at Port Douglas as a trial site for the NBN pre-roll out to have bit of a hub in Port Douglas so people can come in and understand the technology and benefits prior to it going live.”
Ms Johnson said there is also a focus on tropical knowledge to bring back funding for a natural environmental research program.
“It’s a large amount of money previously coordinated here within the region that has gone back to bureaucrats in Canberra for a more strategic approach to how we manage the reef and rainforest,” she said.
“In tourism, the tourism and aviation futures package, there is a real push to revitalise some tourism precincts around the region especially the Daintree World Heritage brand and revitalising that and also looking at Port Douglas infrastructure as part of tourism.”
Addressing the issue of infrastructure in Port Douglas will be done through the Masterplan and is the RDA FNQTI’s to help ensure there is enough infrastructure to address the Chinese market.
