Marlin Challenge ahead
HARDCORE fishermen from around the world are packing their bags for next month’s third annual Port Douglas Marlin Challenge.
The tag-and-release tournament has attracted wealthy game fishermen from Asia and the US, with multi-million- dollar game boats coming from as far away as Port Stephens in New South Wales.
Co- organiser Lynton Heffner said the tournament is growing in stature and is quickly establishing itself as one of Australia’s premier bluewater events.
“There are a lot of expats coming from the US and Asia to compete who are high- end clientele and bringing their families with them,” he said.
“The waters off Port Douglas are some of the best marlin fishing grounds in the world and this tournament is certainly helping put the region on the map.”
The Marlin Challenge kicks off on November 8 and will be contested over four days.
A sail-past will leave the Port Douglas marina at 7.45am on November 8 and the boats will line up in front of the Port Douglas Surf Club in formation for spectators to catch a glimpse of them in action before heading off.
