State players return

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - CLASSIFIEDS - SOCCER

MOSSMAN soccer players Casey Toft and Maru Nitor-Zammataro have recently returned from Townsville having been part of the Centre of Excellence Fusion Under-15 side which was crowned Under-18 champions for North Queensland.

The Fusion defeated the Under-18 Townsville minor premiers Olympic FC 2-1 in the Crad Evans Trophy.

The boys and their coach, Mossman local Doug Baird, have enjoyed unprecedented success this year.

Firstly the squad won their age group in the Rebel Sport Junior Premier league which is contested among all the Centre of Excellence squads from Rockhampton north.

They then won the Under-18 minor premiership in the local Cairns league, following up with a crushing 5-0 win against the second placed Innisfail Under-18 side in the grand final.

“Whilst we were used to playing against bigger older boys, the Olympic side were without doubt the biggest most physical side we had come up against all season and it is a credit to the boys that they refused to be intimidated by them, stuck to the game plan, played the better football and ran out deserved winners,” Baird said.

The squad have all been invited to trial for places in the Australian Premier league entity the FNQ Football Club Ltd which will be fielding teams at Under16 and Under-18 levels in next year’s competition.
