Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - NEWS -

AFTER five years of unflagging resistance, Noosa voted itself to freedom from the Sunshine Coast Council with a landslide majority vote.

For the majority that voted ‘‘yes’’, their mark on the ballot paper was never about what they could or could not afford to pay in rates, it was about their low-key natural and built environment and special lifestyle that had been established over many decades.

The community was passionate about having their right to self-determination and proved conclusively that residents wanted to get Noosa’s voice back ‘‘loud and clear’’.

Most are quietly confident that in de-amalgamating they will receive better services in the new Noosa Council and a smaller rate rise than what the bigger Sunshine Coast Council would have set.
