Douglas went backwards

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - LETTERS -

I HEARD a report on Cairns local radio that FODS supporters were dancing down Macrossan St on Saturday night celebrating the ‘‘yes’’ vote. I would suggest that the people of Douglas put March 9, 2013, in their diaries as the day Douglas went backwards. There was a ‘‘them and us’’ syndrome under the old Douglas Shire Council which has now been exacerbated by the result on Saturday. The strong ‘‘no’’ vote in Alexandra Bay, Daintree Village and Miallo shows they were more than satisfied with Cairns Regional Council. From Mossman north, a majority no vote was returned. It was left to good old Port Douglas to save the skin of FODS from an embarrassing defeat. But on the positive side I suggest that everyone put a reminder note in their diaries for March 9, 2018 - or earlier - by which time the new Douglas council will have been sacked by the State Government due to its inability to carry basic local government functions and lack of financial sustainability and rejoined Cairns Regional Council.
