Great grand prix

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - SPORT -

CALM waters and a sunny day greeted the master women team at Townsville on the weekend for Round Two of the Grand Prix series, hosted by Coral Sea.

Leading the sprint form the start, Lilli Jensen, Liz Ryan, Monique Johnston, Ingrid Juchem, Danielle Bellero and Mia Messinger eventually got chased down and pushed into second place by the Cairns team from Hekili.

‘‘We had a a very strong start but the lighter canoe they were paddling just got them the edge over us,’’ steerer Lilli Jansen said.

The afternoon saw the marathon race being due to a delay in the program.

Hekili was leading very early with Townsville right behind them, leaving Cairns Beaches Townsville and Port Douglas battling for a place.

Cairns Beaches gained a canoe length but our local crew crawled back and with a smart steering manoeuvre by Lilli just turned in front on the halfway marker.

‘‘Coral Sea than overtook us on the return leg, their lightweight canoe was just surfing better,’’ Mia Messenger said.

‘‘We were fighting it our for fourth place overall with Cairns Beaches, they too were paddling in a lightweight canoe, but there was no way we would let them go past.

‘‘ We placed second in the master category, and all that in a canoe almost 100kg heavier than our main rivals.’’

Monique Johnston dominated the Master Women OC1 race and Mia and Danielle just missed a place in their OC2 race.
