Captains take helm
PORT Douglas State School is in good hands with captains Jack Harrington and Kashana Briscoe and vice captains Cassia Jansen and Fraser Allen taking the helm with the express aim of improving school life.
Elections were held last week and more than 20 students applied for the positions.
The leaders went on a camp to Lake Tinaroo to learn important leadership skills including communicating clearly, provide encouragement and support and make decisions.
Vice captain Cassia Jansen said the most important aspect she learnt was modelling behaviour and showing respect for others and the school.
‘‘We want to donate money to the school, environment and charity through fundraisers so everyone gets something and I just want to make it a really fun year,’’ she said.
Principal Benjamin Gaske said when all the students were giving their speeches during the voting process he took note of common themes and the four leaders stood out.
‘‘ Care for each other, be involved in the community, they are tremendous future thinkers and Cassia’s big point that everything needs to be fun,’’ he said.
‘‘There were so many common themes throughout and I was proud to listen to them, I find it really enthralling to work with these guys.’’
