Meditation retreat

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - GROOVE -

THE Mediation Centre and Support Group is holding its inaugural two-day meditation retreat in Port Douglas for anyone in need of time out from a busy lifestyle to calm the thoughts and learn meditation techniques.

The retreat will be suitable for both beginners and experienced meditators and will be led by Cairns-based ordained Zen monk Quentin Reilly, a specialist public health physician trained in well-being and mindfulness meditation.

Reilly has been hosting retreats in Cairns and teaching meditation for five years and said everybody is welcome to attend.

‘‘What’s involved is sitting quietly, letting your inputs from you eyes, ears, mind, dreams and other essential organs slow down and watching your thoughts and what sort of thoughts arrive,’’ he said.

‘‘It requires effort, people have got to be able to just relax and switch off but in the modern day life there’s a lot of modern stimulants like mobile phones and TV, taking things from the outside clouds reality of what you are thinking.’’

The meditation retreat will help people look inside their own minds, which Reilly said is important because whether people have a happy or unhappy life ‘‘depends on how our thoughts are running’’.

‘‘With our thoughts we make our speech and actions and we determine what happens to us,’’ he said.

Mediation Centre and Support Group Cooperative founder Andrea Collisson said people will feel refreshed at the end of the retreat.

‘‘You will clearly be able to see how the mind gradually quietens down and how your awareness of the workings of your mind and bodily experience increases,’’ she said.

‘‘Quentin has a relaxed style, suited to our tropical lifestyle and doesn’t match the stereotype of strict form and ceremony often associated with Zen. His style goes more to the heart of buddhist practice.’’

The meditation retreat will be held from 8am on Saturday, April 6, to 5pm Sunday, April 7, at the Port Douglas CWA Hall and expressions of interest are open now to book your spot.

The cost is by donation and for more information contact Andrea on 4098 5358.
