Dragons scent top talent
REIGNING FNQ Football premier league champions Douglas United are putting the finishing touches on preparations for the opening of the soccer season next month.
United played in a pre-season tournament in Mareba on the weekend, winning three of their matches before losing the final to a strong Mareeba combination.
One of the stars on the weekend was new signing Daniel Bateman, who scored three goals.
Bateman is a high profile signing for United, having played youth football for both Sheffield United and Barnsley.
The club is also chasing the signature of Jamie Gosling who played pro-soccer in England for 12 years.
30-year-old Gosling, whose career highlight was playing for Yeovil against Liverpool in the FA Cup, is keen to play and live in Port Douglas, and would be the highest profile player to join the Dragons.
United coach James Turner said it would be a coup for the club and a boost for their chances of defending their title this season.
Turner said the club would be eager to hear from local businesses that could offer sponsorship and/or employment for Jamie and Daniel.
