Oil wrestling

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - SPORT -

Men, don’t get excited, it’s not the bikini-clad women type of wrestling that you might think. Oil wrestling is held around the world, though one of the oldest competitions is in Turkey, where the wrestling is part of a festival, dating back to 1357 celebrating an Ottoman victory. As you can imagine, the contest involves men covered in oil trying to wrestle the other to the ground - maybe not everyone’s idea of fun. Where the competition was once known to go on for one to two days at a time until a man was able to establish his superiority, the matches were capped in 1975 to 40 minutes long.
