Forecasters say Cyclone Zane will hit north of Cooktown

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - FRONT PAGE -

CYCLONE Zane is expected to hit landfall north of Cooktown after sunrise and before midday today.

Bureau of Meteorology duty forecaster Alicia Duncanson said because it now will hit land north of Cooktown, Cape Tribulation should be spared from the extreme winds on the edge of the system, which was last night downgraded to a category 1.

‘‘The gale force winds experienced by the region are indirectly related to the cyclone,’’ she said.

‘‘Because of the tropical cyclone and a high near Brisbane the combination of those two are producing the strong winds along Queensland’s coast, particularly the northern coast.’’

Cyclone Zane should cross above Cape Grenville, above Lockhart River and continue in a westerly direction over the Cape, diminishing in strength as it progresses.
