‘Tosser’ starts grass fire on Island Point Road
DON’T be a tosser ... of cigarette butts out of your car window. In the early hours of Friday, a small grass fire started from the edge of Island Point Road in Port Douglas and Queensland Fire believe the cause is likely from a cigarette butt being thrown out of a car window. Port Douglas police were patrolling when they noticed the grass fire, which had started from the edge of the road and started putting out the fire until the Port Douglas fire brigade attended and extinguished the blaze. Auxiliary Captain Louie Leone said this is a timely reminder that coming into the drier months, people need to be cautious about high risk areas.
‘‘Because of the slope of Flagstaff Hill Island Point it makes it a very high risk area,’’ he said. ‘‘Every large fire starts from a small fire.’’ Not only can people get fined for littering if caught throwing their cigarette butts out of the window but if it starts a fire, people can also be charged with negligence.
