CORAL Coast Judo Club junior members travelled to Cairns for a fun competition last weekend in a warm-up for the big bouts at the end of the month.

The local kids did exceptionally well for their first competition, engaging in their very first fights and having a great time in the process.

Ryder Sheridan and Bronson Allen came first in their divisions.

Summer Bellero and Skye Stevens came second in their divisions.

Skye Stevens fought in a weight division above her own and the only person in that division that could beat her was Toby Sagacio, who recently won the gold medal at the Queensland International Open in the under 36kg boys division.

Paige Bellero demonstrated some beautiful judo techniques in her fights and her future looks promising.

Coral Coast Judo Club instructor Daniel Albury said the kids did the club proud.

‘‘We had seven students compete and three that didn’t lose a fight,’’ he said.

‘‘It was great for them to be able to get a practice competition in before the big tournament at the end of the month.

‘‘We are really proud of them, they had fun and got a taste of competition.’’

The next tournament the local kids will attend is the Cairns International Open on Sunday, May 26, at Yorkeys Knob where they will meet competitors from as far away as Townsville.
