Gopro in paradise
SOME of Australia’s top short filmmakers have been capturing ‘‘wow’’ factor of the Douglas region to share with the world.
The 20 filmmakers were given GoPro cameras and asked to create a two-minute film for the ‘‘1 Day in Paradise’’ competition.
They embarked on their Tropical North Queensland adventures as part of Tourism and Events Queensland’s major global tourism initiative to increase the appeal of the region.
The films will feature a range of regional experiences including the ancient rainforests, tropical lifestyle, wilderness adventures, indigenous cultural attractions and the Great Barrier Reef.
The storytellers are competing for a $75,000 cash prize and the films will be uploaded to YouTube on May 16 where people can vote for and share their favourite films.
Tourism Minister Jan Stuckey said highlights from the storytellers’ films would be used to create movie trailer-style clips to be aired in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne later this month via cinemas, television and online, including roving pop-up cinemas.
‘‘In June, a panel of Queensland tourism industry representatives will choose a winner of the GoPro challenge based on community engagement, creativity and how close they adhered to the film brief,’’ she said.
‘‘The campaign is one of many initiatives made possible through the State Government’s $20 million Tourism Investment Strategy to sup- port destination marketing.’’
Filmmaker Gulliver Page strapped on his GoPro and jumped out of a helicopter at 5000 feet over the Great Barrier Reef off Port Douglas.
‘‘My entry follows my journey as we take a scenic flight over the beautiful Great Barrier Reef out of Port Douglas,’’ he said.
‘‘Upon arrival, overwhelmed by the view,
Ileap 5000 feet from the helicopter wearing a snorkel and mask flippers and a parachute and after landing in the water I jettison the parachute and swim down to exchange a parachute harness for my scuba gear and continue on to scuba dive on the reef.
‘‘For someone who loves to skydive, scuba dive and generally some adventure, it truly was one day in paradise.’’
