Artist dabbles in Middle East career move
AFTER creating beautiful artworks in Port Douglas for 13 years, Des Spencer is closing his gallery and moving abroad in search of adventure.
The Des Spencer Art gallery’s last day of business will be Sunday, May 19, when Des will finish packing up the shop.
The first step in the upcoming journey is to open a gallery for a short period of time on the Esplanade in Cairns.
Des will move to Dubai in the middle of next year to further his career.
‘‘The Australian embassy and Australian business group in Dubai are both really supportive,’’ he said.
‘‘It is going to be a big change but I am really looking forward to it.’’
Des had his gallery in the Sheraton Mirage for 11 years before relocating to Macrossan St two years ago.
‘‘I love Port Douglas, I have travelled all over but I think Port is still the most beautiful place,’’ he said.
‘‘But for me it all about evolving as an artist and I feel it is time.
‘‘I love an adventure and the plans for the next 10 years or so will provide plenty of that.
‘‘We are thinking at least three years in Dubai, then maybe three years in both New York and Berlin.
‘‘We will probably be back after that time and I would really like to open up an artists’ retreat.’’
Des will be working freelance overseas with the opportunity for pop-up shows in hotels and wants to help Tourism Australia achieve some great exposure for the country.
The new website desspencer.com.au will be up and running within a few weeks, where people can keep tabs on where and what Des is up to with videos being updated every week.
As a farewell gift he is selling all original pieces at half-price.
