Fire aware kids

PREP and Year 1 students from Mossman State School, St Augustine’s Primary School and Miallo State School were all fired up for a safety certificate last week.

Last month the schools were visited by the Mossman Fire and Rescue team and given a fun and interactive education session, to teach them the importance of fire safety and prevention.

Last week Lieutenant Andrew Petrack and Jason Cambieras went back to the schools to check up on how much the kids had remembered.

The students had one month to work out evacuation plans with their families in case there is ever a fire in their home.

Lieutenant Petrack said the kids were very enthusiastic.

‘‘They all talked to their families and practiced their evacuation plans,’’ he said.

‘‘We really want to stress to people that all homes need a fire alarm.

‘‘It also recommended that if you haven’t already changed your fire alarm battery this year, to do so as soon as possible.’’
