DOUGLAS has lost a shining gem, with the passing of the jovial and vibrant ‘‘Wicked Willie’’.

William Montgomery Harland died suddenly last Friday after suffering a massive stroke, survived by his partner Tracey, beloved son Alex, mother Brenda, sister June, brothers John and Richard.

He will be remembered by many as Wicked Willie who created beautiful jewellery, and by many more as a generous friend.

Originally from Scotland, Willie met his partner Tracey in the Caribbean and they travelled the world together, one island at a time, until they arrived in Australia and slowly made their way up the east coast.

They opened their first jewellery shop at the Cairns night market, moved north to Smithfield before finding home in Port Douglas and opening Wicked Willies Jewellery Shop.

Willie’s neighbour and good friend Owen Ives described Willie as the ‘‘nicest fella you will ever meet’’, who loved his family dearly.

‘‘He was a really good father for Alex, he thought the world of him, they were best friends and did everything together,’’ he said.

‘‘He would do anything for him and Tracey.

‘‘Willie was also a very kind, very generous and very loyal friend, he has left a big hole in all our lives.’’

One of his best friends of 14 years Clancy Grigg said Willie gave off a really positive energy.

‘‘He had this ability to listen to you, embrace you if you needed, encouraging you with whatever decision you made and if he didn’t think it was a good one advise you,’’ he said.

‘‘Willie made you feel like you were a special person.’’

Clancy described his friend as a ‘‘beautiful scoundrel’’ who will be dearly missed.

‘‘ He shall be remembered no doubt, although he did often try to make us forget by plying us with whisky,’’ he said.

‘‘He had a love for single malt scotch, a taste for the good stuff - it was always an honour to have a drink with Willie.’’

A celebration of Willie’s life will be held at the Sugar Wharf foreshore today from 3pm. Friends are encouraged to wear bright clothing.
