REPAIRS of Port Douglas Rd will be suspended during key Carnivale events.
Port Douglas Rd between the roundabouts of Barrier St and Ulysses Avenue is being repaired from wet weather damage and was expected to be completed by mid-May.
The roadworks have caused delays of up to 10 minutes for inbound and outbound traffic as only one lane is open.
However Department of Transport and Main Roads spokeswoman Jane Baxter said the department is aware of the importance of Carnivale to the Port Douglas community and the significant number of visitors it attracts.
‘‘ If there are delays to completion, any remaining works will be suspended during key Carnivale events,’’ she said.
‘‘Motorists are encouraged to drive carefully and be mindful of the additional traffic on the roads during Carnivale celebrations.
‘‘ We recommend motorists factor in additional travelling time so they arrive safely and enjoy all the events.’’
Meanwhile, Port Douglas Senior Sergeant Damian Meadows said for people to enjoy themselves this Carnivale but do not even contemplate drink-driving.
‘‘Traffic Branch police will be up here all over the place using marked and unmarked vehicles, they will be doing stationary and static RBTs, so don’t take the chance and drink-drive,’’ he said.
