Brazen thief rides off on hotel’s new electric bicycle
A BRAZEN thief stole an electric bicycle from under the noses of staff at the Peninsula Boutique Hotel on the Esplanade last Wednesday.
Two electric bicycles were purchased as an initiative for guests to get out and see Port Douglas and were proudly on display about two metres from the hotel’s reception counter.
About 8pm last Wednesday a staff member wheeled one bike into the reception area for the night and went into the back office and upon returning to wheel the second bicycle inside discovered it was missing.
Peninsula owner Sheryn Blundstone said they had video footage which showed the thief walking into the hotel entrance and wheeling the bike away.
‘‘This person walked in with his own bike and a bottle of wine in his hand, turned around and walked out, came back in less than two minutes later and just wheeled the bike out,’’ she said.
‘‘It’s devastating because these are worth a lot of money and encourage guests to get out more and see the destination.’’
Ms Blundstone said they had to order another electric bicycle because they were booked to be used by customers.
Peninsula Boutique Hotel is on a mission to retrieve their stolen bike, sending out around 400 emails to local businesses with pictures of the offender and the bike and informing the police.
‘‘Please return the bike, actions like this paint a negative picture for Port Douglas, or as a courtesy advise where the bike is for collection,’’ Ms Blundstone asked.
Anyone who has information on the identity of the offender or knows the whereabouts of the bicycle can contact police on 4087 1999.
