Cycling for cancer

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - FRONT PAGE - Jessie Tolson

LOCAL men Gavin Hardy and Adam Jones have returned from an incredible journey, riding their bicycles 1642km from Adelaide to Canberra via the Snowy Mountains to help in the effort to find a cure for cancer.

Their hard work began months before the Tour De Cure ride, as they had personal donation targets of $12,000 which needed to be raised even before the first turn of the pedals.

But the men committed themselves and with the support of the local community collectively they raised over $37,000 and wore pink to promote breast cancer awareness.

Tour De Cure has raised nearly $2.5 million this year alone, and the money will go towards research to find a cure for cancer and supporting sufferers through their cancer journey.

Cancer is the leading cause of death in Australia with 1463 people told every day they have some form of the illness.

With the help of dedicated people like Gavin and Adam, valuable funds are being raised to help find a cure and help raise awareness in the community and schools.

The riders shared their Be Fit, Be Healthy, Be Happy message with over 4500 school children on their 10-day pilgrimage.

Gavin, who raised a whopping $21,685 from his ride, said it was an enriching experience.

‘‘ We have enjoyed so much encouragement from the community and the camaraderie of a team of people, from different backgrounds, all riding for their own reasons, brought together by one cause and working towards the same goal finding a cure for cancer,’’ he said.

‘‘At times the riding was tough, but thoughts of friends and loved ones deal- ing with cancer were always there to spur us on.

‘‘You actually get so much back from doing something like this, in fitness, health of heart - both physically and mentally - and mind.

‘‘Anyone wishing to have an amazing personal experience whilst supporting an incredibly worthwhile cause should apply.’’
