Tour­na­ment suc­cess

THE Port Dou­glas Ten­nis Club held its first par­entchild tour­na­ment of the year last week­end.

It was an enor­mous suc­cess with more en­tries than last year.

Five teams of the youngest play­ers (8-and-un­der) played red balls on Satur­day morn­ing.

All matches were played fairly with Mikayla and Tammy Jean win­ning by three wins and one draw against last year’s win­ner Jas­mine Orchard.

Holly and Vicky Dow­ell and Tay­lor West and Louise Pol­lain had both two wins, how­ever Tay­lor and Louise won more points to be run­ners-up.

Best sports­man­ship went to Jas­mine Orchard.

Di­vi­sion 2 gets big­ger ev­ery year with some of the ju­niors ready to make a step up in Di­vi­sion 1 very soon.

Two groups of six and seven cou­ples com­peted fiercely but Con­nor and Joan Berzinki had lit­tle re­sis­tance in their group and won all their matches.

New­com­ers Mitch and Sue Ral­stone made a very good im­pres­sion by ad­vanc­ing as well in the semis.

In the other group Matty Day was the rev­e­la­tion of this t our­na­ment and im­pressed ev­ery­one with his con­sis­tency and per­fect tech­nique to win all his matches with June Hall.

For the other spot in the semis three other teams bat­tled fiercely.

Josh D’Arcy and Helen Hahn, Emma and Scott Hud­son and Kira and Sjohn L’Es­trange ended up with four wins but Emma and Scott had more points and faced Con­nor and Joan in the semi-fi­nal which Con­nor and Joan won.

The other semi-fi­nal was won by Matty and June.

In the fi­nal Con­nor and Joan demon­strated their dom­i­nance and won the tour­na­ment again.

Best Sports­man­ship award went to Char­lie Mo­ran and most im­proved player went to Jai L’Es­trange.

On Sun­day Di­vi­sion 1 played full two-set matches with a su­per tiebreaker.

Af­ter the first round Blake John­ston and June Hall were first and Kiani and Joan Berzin­ski sec­ond.

In the fi­nal Blake and June showed more con­sis­tency and forced Kiani and Joan in mak­ing more mis­takes to win 6-2, 6-0.

The com­ing weeks are packed with plenty of ten­nis com­pe­ti­tions.

On Satur­day for the Car­ni­vale beach day the club is or­gan­is­ing beach ten­nis while on Sun­day, May 26, it is the pre-tri­als for Penin­sula pri­mary school ten­nis tri­als at the PDTC.
