THE Port Douglas Tennis Club held its first parentchild tournament of the year last weekend.
It was an enormous success with more entries than last year.
Five teams of the youngest players (8-and-under) played red balls on Saturday morning.
All matches were played fairly with Mikayla and Tammy Jean winning by three wins and one draw against last year’s winner Jasmine Orchard.
Holly and Vicky Dowell and Taylor West and Louise Pollain had both two wins, however Taylor and Louise won more points to be runners-up.
Best sportsmanship went to Jasmine Orchard.
Division 2 gets bigger every year with some of the juniors ready to make a step up in Division 1 very soon.
Two groups of six and seven couples competed fiercely but Connor and Joan Berzinki had little resistance in their group and won all their matches.
Newcomers Mitch and Sue Ralstone made a very good impression by advancing as well in the semis.
In the other group Matty Day was the revelation of this t ournament and impressed everyone with his consistency and perfect technique to win all his matches with June Hall.
For the other spot in the semis three other teams battled fiercely.
Josh D’Arcy and Helen Hahn, Emma and Scott Hudson and Kira and Sjohn L’Estrange ended up with four wins but Emma and Scott had more points and faced Connor and Joan in the semi-final which Connor and Joan won.
The other semi-final was won by Matty and June.
In the final Connor and Joan demonstrated their dominance and won the tournament again.
Best Sportsmanship award went to Charlie Moran and most improved player went to Jai L’Estrange.
On Sunday Division 1 played full two-set matches with a super tiebreaker.
After the first round Blake Johnston and June Hall were first and Kiani and Joan Berzinski second.
In the final Blake and June showed more consistency and forced Kiani and Joan in making more mistakes to win 6-2, 6-0.
The coming weeks are packed with plenty of tennis competitions.
