INSPIRED by her best friend’s journey with cancer, Mossman- based author Mandy Magro has released her new romance novel Flame Tree Hill.
Heroine Kirsty Mitchell returns to her family farm from the UK in Flame Trill Hill and strikes up a love affair with the rodeo-mad local vet Aden, her childhood friend, before realising she has breast cancer.
The book draws on Ms Magro’s friend Joanne Jackson’s journal she kept throughout her battle with breast cancer, which she went through twice and won.
Ms Magro said Joanne waited until the book was finished before she read it and is happy to be able to share her journey.
‘‘ She had been saying she wanted to reach out to people and tell her story and what better way than put it in one of my books,’’ she said.
‘‘ I had seen what she went through and her diaries gave me a real insight and that was the inspiration behind it.
‘‘ The main men in my books are figments of my imagination, they are all perfect and that’s what women want in a romance novel, a man who is strong, protective and lays down his life for her.’’
The novel, Ms Magro’s third, took about 18 months to complete and hit the shelves yesterday.
Her next book is being edited and she has already started on her the fifth.
‘‘My fourth is called Driftwood and has Adam Brand in it, it’s a combination of 1860s bushrangers with a modern day set up,,’’ she said.
‘‘It’s a bit of wild boys cross the novels I write now, the big difference is there was a lot of research from history and writing in Adam Brand as a character was quite challenging because he is real.
‘‘He called me the ‘Queen of Smooch’ when he started reading the first chapter.’’
Ms Magro said her novels are based around the area she lives and after having previously lived in Dimbulah and Mareeba, her fifth novel she is working on will have echoes of Mossman.
‘‘Even though it’s going to be fictional it’s still using the area where I live as an explanation of the surrounds and it’s nice to get out of the red dust and dirt and go coastal,’ she said.
‘‘ Mossman is a little country town on the coast so it has the best of both worlds and that’s coming through in the book.
‘‘I couldn’t imagine my life without writing - it’s a pleasure and I can work in my pajamas.’’
