Biking for a good cause
ALMOST 50 bikes made their way past Port Douglas and through Shannonvale crossing on their way up to Undara for the Back to Undara Motorcycle Muster on Saturday.
The annual event raises money for the Cairns Base Hospital paediatric unit, to build a playground for patients to have fun and be kids.
The $1.2m project aims to build the playground on the second level rooftop next to the childrens’ ward and is one of the Far North Queensland Hospital Foundation’s biggest fundraisers.
This year the 48 riders raised over $58,000 to reach a tally of $940,000 raised so far for the playground.
Fundraising and marketing manager Glenys Duncombe, who was also backup crew with the luggage and meals for the riders, said not only is the muster for a good cause, it is a fun ride for the participants.
‘‘The riders ride their bikes because they enjoy the sport and also enjoy raising money for a good cause and it was a really great weekend, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves,’’ she said.
‘‘I’ve done that trip many times and it’s the prettiest drive to go on via the Cook Highway and Undara’s a fantastic place to spend the night.
‘‘A lot of the riders come back each year and we had a lot of newcomers this year, we want to promote it and get more guys out there next year.’’
