Raiders walk away winners against JCU
THE Port Douglas Reef Raiders enjoyed a convincing win against JCU at the weekend, stepping back into form after a week of hard training.
The 22-14 win was set up in the second half with a determined and stoic effort by the team across the park which helped to erase the memory of the week before and highlighted the missed opportunity that saw the Raiders searching for answers during the week.
Shane Branch said the team was working hard to improve their performance.
‘‘ New plays were formulated and implemented at Saturday’s match with success and a lot more work on these this week and on into the season will hopefully see our lineout develop into the best in the competition,’’ he said.
The game was fast-paced with each team playing their structures well and a measure of the quality of play was the first scrum was set in the 21st minute.
The first half was well contested with JCU scoring two converted tries to the Raiders’ one but this was not a true reflection of the game as the Raiders crossed three other times only to be held up or have the try disallowed in goal.
The half time talk must have had the right amount of passion because the Raiders came out all guns blazing in attack and defence in the second half with relentless pressure on JCU.
The intensity increased and a brilliant individual try to Pete Gilmour saw the score keeper back on his feet.
Pete chipped over the opposing back line winning the chase to the ball toeing it on two more times until picking it up in the motion of diving over the line in a tackle converted by Grae.
A great team effort saw Jordan Crossing in the corner for his second try the conversion was not successful but the winning lead was established with 20 minutes to play 22-14.
JCU to their credit lifted and came back at the Raiders and under a barrage of penalties they stood their ground with very impressive goal line defence holding JCU out and leaving them outside seven points so missing their bonus point.
Best on ground was Jordan Marsh 3 points, Cam Smith 2 points and Clint Kachel 1.
The Raiders will take on Barron at Raider Park on Saturday at 4pm.
