PORT Douglas triathlete Nick Carling recorded a comfortable victory in his first race of the season. Carling only decided to take part in the Cairns Crocs Triathlon Club Duathlon in memory of friend Tanya Roneberg who was killed while cycling in Cairns recently. The race was initially supposed to be a triathlon but with stinger season still in swing the race was changed to a run, ride, run. Around 200 competitors of all ages and abilities turning out to have a crack and Carling took off strong with a good lead heading into run to bike transition after the 3km run. A turnaround error on the bike cost him time in the 20km leg and he trailed the leader by 23 seconds heading into the final run.

Carling comfortably reeled him in on the 4.5km run to complete the course in 55 minutes 30 seconds. He will compete in the Gold Coast Half-Marathon and Townsville Half-Marathon before taking on the world’s best in the Ironman 70.3 world championships in Las Vegas in September.
