Mayor says Douglas costs too much

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - FRONT PAGE -

CAIRNS Regional Council Mayor Bob Manning believes ‘‘we’ve spent more money in the Douglas Shire than we raised from them’’. Cr Manning told the Gazette yesterday council receives around 11 per cent of rates, levies and charges from the Douglas Shire, but in this current financial year spent 12.7 per cent of expenses in Douglas and 14 per cent of the total capital works budget. ‘‘There was even a stronger commitment by the current council for future capital expenditure in the DSC area - $75 million had been scheduled in CRC’s forward plans over the next five years,’’ he said. Division 10 councillor Julia Leu refutes this claim and said items such as bridges, roads and water projects, received substantial federal and state grants. ‘‘Any stated so called future commitments can’t be trusted and are meaningless, as already the Manning council has enforced cuts backs to labour, materials and services and the proposed capital works budget across CRC has been reduced by millions,’’ she said.
