$80 mil­lion down 2 per cent De­spite the soft eco­nomic out­look for France and Italy, vis­i­tors to Aus­tralia in­creased by 2 per­cent and 12 per cent re­spec­tively for the year-end­ing De­cem­ber 2012. French ar­rivals num­bers were driven by in­creases in the Hol­i­day and VFR seg­ments. Strong VFR travel may be linked to the youth/work­ing hol­i­day seg­ments. Ex­pen­di­ture in Aus­tralia from French vis­i­tors how­ever showed signs of de­cline, which is linked to a de­cline in Busi­ness ar­rivals and VFR vis­i­tors spend­ing less on their trips to Aus­tralia. Nights spent in re­gional Aus­tralia in­creased 9 per cent. 93 per cent came as in­de­pen­dent trav­ellers 68 per cent trav­elled solo to Aus­tralia 57 per cent were on their first visit to Aus­tralia

63 per cent of vis­i­tors to Queens­land are 15-29 years of age 68 per cent trav­elled solo to Queens­land 11 per cent were on pack­aged hol­i­days
