$80 mil­lion no change Eu­ro­peans took more trips in 2012 than in 2011. The num­ber of out­bound trips rose 2 per cent to 421 mil­lion, fol­low­ing a 3 per cent in­crease in 2011. While the num­ber of overnight stays re­mained sta­ble at 3.5 bil­lion nights, out­bound travel ex­pen­di­tures rose 2 per cent to 353 bil­lion Euro. Travel to the Amer­i­cas in­creased 2 per cent, how­ever the largest in­crease was to the Asia Pa­cific re­gion with 8 per cent. Rus­sia was Europe’s big­gest mover with a 12 per cent rise in out­bound travel due to the strong econ­omy and in­creas­ing af­flu­ence. Strong cur­ren­cies helped Switzer­land and Nor­way gain ex­tra travel value.
