$80 million no change Europeans took more trips in 2012 than in 2011. The number of outbound trips rose 2 per cent to 421 million, following a 3 per cent increase in 2011. While the number of overnight stays remained stable at 3.5 billion nights, outbound travel expenditures rose 2 per cent to 353 billion Euro. Travel to the Americas increased 2 per cent, however the largest increase was to the Asia Pacific region with 8 per cent. Russia was Europe’s biggest mover with a 12 per cent rise in outbound travel due to the strong economy and increasing affluence. Strong currencies helped Switzerland and Norway gain extra travel value.
