THE fed­eral elec­tions next Satur­day, Septem­ber 6, will de­cide which party will lead Aus­tralia into the fu­ture and Dou­glas has its part to play in de­cid­ing who will best rep­re­sent them. Dou­glas is part of the Le­ich­hardt elec­toral di­vi­sion, which was formed in 1949. Named af­ter ex­plorer and sci­en­tist Friedrich Le­ich­hardt (1813-48), ge­o­graph­i­cally it is the largest elec­torate in Aus­tralia, cov­er­ing 148,988 sq km. The bound­aries go from the Tor­res Strait is­lands down to Bent­ley Park, south of Cairns, and stretch across the cape to Kowanyama.
