I’m passionate about building a sustainable Leichhardt, there are so many areas we need to address, the glaring issue is food security. Farmers are being driven down in price and they don’t have the opportunity to maximise profit to reinvest into farms to establish sustainable farming practices. A lot of farmers are on the verge of going broke and we will lose them and we will lose the farmland as well. I am working on a program with major stakeholders called a Taste of Paradise food network where people can buy direct from farmers. The Douglas region is extremely well placed and we need to make sure tourism targets remain as large as possible for international and national tourists. To do we that need to look after the reef and make sure there is no dredging that spreads toxic materials, no major shipping to reduce the chance of oil spills and making sure the reef is valued for the preciousness that it is.
