Shire election date wait

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - FRONT PAGE -

THE race is on to pick the date for local elections, with rumours from credible sources of a midNovember vote.

Local Government Minister David Crisafulli has denied the talk of a mid-November election date for the Douglas Shire Council and refused to even suggest when the announcement will be.

‘‘We purposely didn’t want to make any announcement during the federal election for a couple of reasons,’’ Minister Crisafulli told The Gazette.

‘‘ The federal election has been particularly nasty, we’ve seen the worst of what politics has to offer and I think it’s best to offer and people putting up their hand to serve the community is the purest form of government and I didn’t want this election to be shrouded in the federal election.

‘‘This is a once in a generation time for the community to effectively re-establish the council and get it right.’’

Minister Crisafulli would not confirm the date nor when the announcement of the date might be and said the government will work out a appropriate date and let everyone know after this weekend’s elections.

‘‘It won’t be too far away and we will give everyone enough time to run a campaign,’’ he said.
