Fishing with heff

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - CLASSIFIEDS -

AFTER a devilish patch of weather last week we are now experiencing a brilliant run which is along the lines one would expect for this time of year. With the fine conditions comes plenty of fishing opportunity and reports have been productive since the weekend.

On the reef it has been a solid catch rate on our preferred targeted red species with coral trout, large mouth nannygai and red emperor featuring heavily in recent times. Some of the large mouth in particular have been on the large size with plenty of 7-10kg models returning on local charters. The coral trout have been a consistent 3-4kg and the red emperor have been around the 5kg mark or 60- 65cm range. Skipper Steve Adamson of Dragon Lady Charters says with the good weather comes plenty of interest to hit the water and the fishing has complimented their efforts. He says the bite hasn’t been right throughout the day but the hangs around the turn of the tide has seen the fish really come on the bite. They’ve been catching around 75% of their fish during this window which has lasted for about an hour. Outside of this it has been a matter of scratching around plucking a few fish here and there. Our rivers and creeks have seen a better strike rate with the sunny days at hand and with cleaner water pushing in and out of the systems. According to Jake Wyatt of Port Douglas Sportfishing he’s seen a solid run on the mangrove jack in the upper reaches of the creeks and closer to the mouth there’s been mid sized trevally and queenfish being quite active on the run in tide. The barra are now starting to warm to the occasion and quite a few juvenile fish were registered as the days warmed up. With some calm days on hand he’s keen to see a bit of bluewater action over the coming days having been couped up the local estuary during the bad weather. The forecast for the coming next week looks absolutely juicy and you’ll be kicking yourself if you can’t get out among it.
