A marathon effort
ONE man is doing his bit for Port Douglas animal refuge Paws & Claws.
Help QT fitness manager Jeremy Lebeuf and his rescue dog Buddy are out to raise funds for Paws & Claws, which desperately needs support to build its new facilities before formerly homeless animals once again become homeless.
Jeremy and his wife adopted Buddy from Paws & Claws around five months ago and Jeremy said he is a great addition to the family.
‘‘ We have been volunteering and walking the dogs at Paws & Claws for years,’’ he said. ‘‘We just loved him and decided to take him home. We have been trying to work out how we can help them out because Paws & Claws is such a great organisation.’’
Jeremy, with the support of QT Resort Port Douglas, will line up in the Great Barrier Reef half Marathon on November 3, and unless he can receive more than $500 in donations to Paws & Claws by October 1, he will run the full marathon.
QT Resort has sweetened the pot by drawing off a SPAQ voucher for two 2 to all who donate from now until November 1. Donate online at pawsandclaws. org. au and state ‘‘Jeremy’s run’’, your name and contact details to be in the draw for the SPAQ prize.
Liz Need, secretary of Paws & Claws, said the organisation was thrilled Jeremy was taking on this challenge.
‘‘The Great Barrier Reef Marathon is a really great local event and we know the community will get behind Jeremy in raising $500 by October 1, so he’ll upgrade to the full marathon distance,’’ she said. ‘‘Since the commencement of our recent fundraising drive, we have received some very generous donations, however, we still have a significant amount to raise by the end of the year in order to reach our target balance of $500,000.’’
The new facilities will consist of a refuge for 30 animals, a caretaker’s residence, dog boarding kennels (including premium kennels), a cattery, car park, reception area and space for a veterinary clinic.
