Opportunities in aged care work
GAINING a qualification in aged care will assist not only job seekers, but people who are already caring for the elderly.
Mossman-based Far North Training and Consultancy has been approved for certificate 3 training in aged care and hospitality, which both come under the state government’s funding initiative.
FNTC aged care trainer Peter Moss said there is a demand for aged care training in the community, otherwise people have to travel to Cairns.
‘‘This is a great course for volunteers, general carers and family members who are looking after the elderly to gain a nationally recognised certificate,’’ he said.
‘‘We not only provide information but also hands- on learning with modern equipment available – if you want to know what equipment is available come in here and we can show you them and where to buy them.
‘‘We not only teach about day to day care, but prepare for what’s going to happen in the future when they progress in ageing and illness and being prepared to deal with it.’’
Anyone can apply for the government subsidised training, which Mr Moss said is very flexible.
‘ ‘ We are l ooking for expressions of interest and are prepared to take the course further than just Mossman; we are prepared to travel to meet the needs of the area,’’ he said.
‘‘We are flexible. People can come in here or do it at home, you don’t have to be here all the time, we are here to suit the needs of the students and are very local- ised. Come in and say hello and talk to us about your needs and expectations.’’
The Mossman company is also offering certificate 3 in hospitality, which will be held as an eight- week course, which FNTC CEO Liz Ross said is open to everyone.
‘‘ We are willing to work within the workplace to help people gain qualifications,’’ she said.
‘‘We are being supported by the Sheraton who has offered us the use of their kitchen for the delivery of training, under the new training package you have got to be exposed to a range of items that smaller places don’t have.’’ For more information or to send your expressions of interest, contact Liz Ross at email@example.com or call 4098 1228.
