PORT Douglas Ambulance has welcomed a new member to its team.

Zak Pitra, an Advanced Care Paramedic 2, has joined the Port station after a six-year posting in Cairns.

Originally from Melbourne, Zac worked with the Victorian Police while undertaking a paramedic science degree.

Like many ‘‘Mexicans’’ before him, Zak first visited Cairns on holiday, liked what he saw, came back for another holiday and decided to make the move permanent.

After further training he was accepted into the Queensland Ambulance Service. It’s a job he loves.

‘‘Going to someone requiring assistance, it’s great to see we can help individuals, and provide both relief for them and their families,’’ Zak said.

‘‘There’s also the fact you don’t know what is going to happen on a call-out, you just have to be ready to deal with any situation.’’

Zac’s time will be split between Yarrabah and Port Douglas stations.
