Thanks for your help, let’s do it again
AS co-ordinator for the the Douglas Shire Sustainability Group’s Mangroves Clean Up site I would like to thank volunteers Peter Priebe, David Carey, Heidi Taylor (Tangaroa Blue), Amber Rich, Dave and Gail Jowett, Katrin Aia and Kevin Eldridge for their time and efforts last Sunday.
The clean up was organised in conjunction with the Clean Up Australia Day - Great Northern Clean Up and targeted Wharf Street, Port Douglas between Port O’ Call Backpackers and the Port Douglas Yacht Club.
Volunteers collected enough bottles, tins, plastic and cigarette butts to fill seven wheelie bins. Three car tyres, a bicycle wheel, laminated timber, fluorescent tube, irrigation pipes, plumbing pipe, metal tubing, a paint tray, spade, step ladder and the obligatory shopping trolley were also removed from the mangroves and road sides.
The DSSG will endeavour to make this an annual clean up event and welcomes more volunteers to join in their efforts next year.
