The round­about we de­serve?

A few months ago I at­tended a meet­ing with lo­cal mem­ber David Kemp­ton and rep­re­sen­ta­tives of the Main Roads Depart­ment. At that meet­ing the Main Roads rep­re­sen­ta­tives in­di­cated their pre­ferred op­tion was to do noth­ing at the in­ter­sec­tion of the Cook Hwy and Port Dou­glas Road as they con­sid­ered it was not a se­ri­ous safety is­sue. They also in­di­cated that a sin­gle lane round­about could be built within a bud­get of about $2 mil­lion and that they may be able to in­clude some aes­thetic fea­tures within that bud­get. Now we have a plan for a sin­gle lane con­crete round­about. This it to­tally un­ac­cept­able for an iconic des­ti­na­tion such as Port Dou­glas. Surely the state can af­ford a lit­tle more to pro­vide some sort of en­trance state­ment for Port Dou­glas. If not, just turf it and leave it up to the
