WALK off the beaten track and ex­pe­ri­ence na­ture first hand with new Port Dou­glas busi­ness Trop­i­cal Treks.

Af­ter notic­ing a niche in the mar­ket for ‘‘slow tourism’’, di­rec­tor and guide Steve Grainger said they de­cided to start a busi­ness cater­ing to all lev­els of bush­walk­ers, from the in­ex­pe­ri­enced who want to see the coun­try to ex­pe­ri­enced hik­ers and trekkers.

‘‘Bush­walk­ing, trekking, hik­ing, has al­ways been part of my life and I’ve trav­elled in many coun­tries and af­ter mov­ing up to North Queens­land I saw there was a need here for ded­i­cated bush­walk­ing,’’ he said.

‘‘I fig­ured this is what I like to do and started guid­ing in Cape York and the Gulf Pen­nin­sula and af­ter a cou­ple of years de­cided to do a hik­ing/ bush­walk­ing tour op­er­a­tion for this re­gion based around the Wet Trop­ics. ‘‘The ethos is cen­tred around slow tourism, which is a fairly new con­cept about pro­vid­ing less trav­el­ling dis­tance and more qual­ity of the ex­peri-
