Council hopefuls meet Daintree
THE Daintree community will get a chance to meet council candidates and ensure Daintree has a voice in the new Douglas Shire Council.
Daintree Marketing Cooperative has organised a meeting on Monday, October 28, open to the greater Daintree community, where all candidates have been invited to address the meeting and answer questions.
Chair Sheena Walshaw said the meeting is important considering, so far, no one north of the Daintree River or from the Daintree Village has put their hand up for a councillor position. ‘‘DMC are coordinating the meeting on behalf of our members for two reasons: first, to create an opportunity for prospective councillors to understand the issues and opportunities facing our community,’’ she said.
‘‘Second, for our members to assess which councillors might best represent the interests of the Daintree tourism industry.
‘‘ Along with the Great Barrier Reef, the Daintree is the major draw card for visitors to the Douglas region and we’re keen to ensure tourism - and tourism in the Daintree specifically - are supported by the new Douglas Shire Council.’’
Division 10 councillor, who is also running for Mayor, Julia Leu, will be attending the meeting. All candidates are invited and the event will be chaired by Gaye Scott from the 20/20 Group, who is a director of the DMC.
‘‘We’ve invited all candidates to address the meeting and have requested they respond to a list of questions that represents some of the key issues of interest to our members,’’ Ms Walshaw said. ‘‘ Majority of Daintree residents voted against de-amalgamation, but that vote’s over and done, it’s important now to look to the future council with an open mind and with a constructive dialogue.
‘‘We hope that dialogue will begin when we meet the candidates and will result in the election of a team that listens to, understands and works with our community to achieve the best for the shire.’’ Questions will be based around several topics that concern both residents and businesses in the Daintree, including tourism funding, the Daintree ferry, Daintree Gateway, signage, power and more.
The Daintree meeting is on Monday, October 28 from 10am-12pm at the Cow Bay Hotel. RSVP to email@example.com
