Sprinting to the reef

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - FRONT PAGE -

A demand for half-day tours to the outer reef has been the main motivator behind Reef Sprinter launching their third boat.

Reef Sprinter 3 was officially launched on Tuesday as a half-day tour to the outer reef, getting to the destination in less than 40 minutes with two hours of snorkelling at the Third Sister Reef, right next to Turtle Bay.

Steve and Cathy Sherwell own and operate Reef Sprinter and said Third Sister Reef has everything tourists want to see.

‘‘There’s caves, canyons, turtles, giant clams, clown fish, all of the stuff tourists want to see in one spot. It’s quite a special site,’’ Steve Sherwell said.

‘‘Reef Sprinter is basically an evolution. We had big calls for outer reef trips and there was a gap in the market. No one does half-day outer reef trips and we go to Low Isles or inner reefs, so it was supply and demand.

‘‘Reef Sprinter 3’s name came from the fact it has three big engines on the back - 300 horse power each - it uses 3 litres of fuel per minute, we are shop three at the Marina and it’s our third boat.’’

Reef Sprinter 1 runs out to Low Isles and became so popular the operators bought the Jet Sprinter to fill in the gaps and now have extended to a third boat.

Mr Sherwell said it’s about demand and also the fact tourism number seems to be on the increase.

‘‘ Every year we have operated there’s always been an improvement year on year, we haven’t seen any down turn at all,’’ he said.

‘‘Quick trip snorkelling has become more popular and we specialise in getting out there quick so people don’t get sea sick, and so they don’t take all day getting there to show them a spectacular reef.’’
