All about cyclone season

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - FRONT PAGE -

THIS week is Get Ready for Cyclones Week to bring on the wet and maybe stormy season.

Mossman State School was fortunate to have Chris Wegger from Emergency Management Queensland visit for a talk and to get the kids prepared for any emergencies this year.

His presentation included what to do, the dangers, photos of Yasi damage, where to evacuate, having an emergency kit prepared at home and getting your house ready by clearing gutters and loose items around the yard. The students were delighted to receive stickers, tracking maps, mini first aid kits, fridge magnets and information booklets to take home and share the important advice with their families. They know how to find cyclone information on the BOM website and track cyclones.

Jasmine Kirk said she will definitely prepare her emergency kit - including torches, toilet paper, batteries, radio, water, non-perishable items and a first aid kit. Jye Hauser says he will have a generator ready, portable stove, all his important stuff in a waterproof satchel and his iPod. Kristen Johnston plans to evacuate to her friend’s place up the hill. The kids enjoy being educated about storm safety as it is a real possibility in the tropics.
