Marc McCor­mack wins pres­ti­gious press photo award

THE Cairns Post’s pho­to­graphic ed­i­tor Marc McCor­mack has won the 2013 NikonWalk­ley Com­mu­nity/Re­gional Prize for photography.

The na­tional ac­co­lade was an­nounced on Tues­day night. Mr McCor­mack’s work, which in­cluded five photographs of com­mu­nity life in the Far North, was de­scribed by the judges as show­ing ‘‘cre­ativ­ity in cov­er­ing the range of sto­ries re­gional pho­tog­ra­phers are faced with ev­ery day.’’

‘‘From il­lus­trat­ing a heat wave with an ac­ro­batic dog, to sport­ing ac­tion at a rodeo and coax­ing a tiny new­born turtle from his shell, McCor­mack brings the sto­ries of his Cairns com­mu­nity to life.’’ It is the sec­ond time in his ca­reer Mr McCor­mack has been hon­oured with a Walkley, one of the high­est me­dia awards in the coun­try. It also adds to achieve­ments in­clud­ing the APJ 2013 pho­to­graph of the year (pro­fes­sional); twice win­ner of the Clar­ion Awards, Queens­land; and fi­nal­ist in the World Wildlife Pho­tog­ra­pher of the Year Awards held in Lon­don.
