THE Cairns and Far North Environment Centre presented the Queensland government a petition bearing more than 1000 signatures calling for a state-wide ban on plastic shopping bags.
The Minister for Environment Andrew Powell received the petition last Friday, after it was presented to Premier Newman’s office the previous day.
CAFNEC coordinator Anna McGuire said they are proud to pass on the petition which has been supported by the community in the region.
‘‘Plastic shopping bags kill and injure marine life and add to growing waste disposal problems. Introducing a ban is a tried and tested way to resolve this problem,’’ she said.
‘‘South Australia, Northern Territory and the ACT have already successfully implemented a ban on single-use plastic shopping bags.’’
