AL­THOUGH the main con­struc­tion work was un­der­taken by the con­trac­tor and his team, work such as reroof­ing the club­house was un­der­taken by vol­un­teers of var­i­ous skill lev­els su­per­vised by Bob. Those vol­un­teers in­cluded the shire build­ing in­spec­tor who had come out to lend a hand. ‘‘It was dur­ing this roof­ing op­er­a­tion that drinkers in the club were dis­turbed by an enor­mous crash, and on en­ter­ing the kitchen found a dazed but un­hurt build­ing in­spec­tor who had fallen from the roof and through the ceil­ing. Ru­mours abounded that he was pushed by one of the trades­men also on the roof, but ap­par­ently a sud­den gust of wind while he was car­ry­ing a sheet of iron was the cause.
