Fishing with heff
WE experienced another great week of weather and the fishing reports have remained consistently good over the past week.
Having gone off the bite for a few days following the spawning process, the coral trout came back on the bite with a vengeance in recent times. For a few days they went on a fast and then decided it was time to fill the belly. According to both Dragon Lady and Saltaire Charters they experienced similar results with some healthy catches recorded of late. Both skippers observed that the majority of fish had completely empty stomachs and were well overdue for a good feed. There was still the odd trout with roe inside which indicates a proportion of this species will spawn in the next bout of reef closures at the very end of October. Other species to show some form were gold spot trevally, sweetlip, stripeys and the odd Spanish mackerel caught on the float.
On the light tackle scene their continues to be some great fish caught on the shelf ranging from yellowfin tuna to wahoo to big Spanish mackerel. The giant trevally fishing was also much improved in the last few days aided by some good run in the tides.
News further north has the Lizard Island Marlin Classic underway and after Day 2 of fishing 22 marlin had been tagged thus far in the seven-day tournament. These early figures indicate that healthy numbers of big fish will be caught during this competition. Local vessel Reel Chase finds itself in the top half of the field after the first two days.
Looking ahead Friday might see the end of the nice weather for a little while with freshening winds and rain expected over the weekend. Some may appreciate the cooler change after an incredibly long run of hot, calm weather. I’m not sure you would agree if you were hoping to get offshore this weekend !
