A score for Outriggers

20th Cup Calcutta

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - FRONT PAGE -

PORT Douglas Outrigger Canoe Club will host its 20th Melbourne Cup Calcutta Auction, a longstanding tradition with the Courthouse Hotel.

Founding member Irene Denholm recalls in 1993 that the occasion was one of the biggest events in Port Douglas’s Melbourne Cup calendar, with enthusiastic bidding from visitors and locals alike.

Les ‘‘Bassie’’ Bass was the flamboyant and colourful first auctioneer, enthralling the punters with his unsurpassed knowledge of the field and superb showmanship. Later, ‘‘Clancy’’ Grigg, musician and MC extraordinaire, took over inciting the punters to bid for their favourite nag, thus aiding and abetting the Outriggers in what is probably their biggest fundraiser for the year.
